smokin’ obama

December 31, 2009

wow, we had a busy busy month here at the gallery! luckily, things are settling down and we’re all looking forward to and getting ready for the new year.

today i wanted to write up something about one of our artists, who we love. though we carry many prints by claudia porter, we also consistently carry her original paintings here. it’s an understatement to say that people love her work, especially locals – who are obviously drawn to her many paintings of portland.

this by far, has been the most popular piece and it’s easy to see why. whether you love him or hate him, you can’t deny that obama is making waves and making history.

what we’ve noticed here at the gallery is that what people love most about this painting is the fact that he is smoking. unfortunately, this painting recently sold… but don’t be sad, because claudia is doing a whole series of original obama paintings! we’ll soon be taking this down to ship it off to its new owner, but a new one will be hanging in its place.

definitely check out the other paintings as well, since they are all really great too!

holiday shopping!

November 27, 2009

well, it’s that time of year again. i’m sure many of you are out braving the black friday frenzy. we’re not ready to deal with that here, so when you’re done with all the craziness you can be sure that you’ll have a calm and cool shopping spree with us.

today i wanted to highlight some of the eclectic and fun items that we have here. any of these things (and really anything on our website) are really great gifts for that person who is just so hard to shop for. we often get dubbed the shop where you can get something for someone who ‘already has everything’. it’s so true! everything we have is unique, practical and price conscious. that last part is pretty important too, since everyone is looking for ways to save their pennies in this economy.

ok ok… let’s get started here….

first off, we have some beautiful new jewelry from aroha silhouettes. created by one of the nicest people around, tania hennessy, these earrings and necklaces are smaller, shinier versions of her popular vinyl record series. we loved those so much, we just had to get in on her new line of stainless steel pieces. so lovely!

we also have a lot of  fun stuff from gama go. cute wallets, coin purses, magnets, mugs, etc. all of it is so wallet friendly as well. all gama go merch is between $9-$24. it really doesn’t get any better than that, right??

i of course cannot forget to mention some of the amazing amazing prints that we also carry. this deathcab print is one of my faves and by local artist dan stiles. we also have tons and tons of other really fantastic screen prints and giclee prints.

for the people you know that work hard AND like to have fun, we have tons of really great office items like these ‘4 eyes flash drives’ from imm living. this flash drive is not only super unique and original, but also doubles as a bookmark too! how cool is that?

we also have some cool stuff for the kiddos like these bObles tumbling animals. these are really great for kids of any age to teach them coordination, agility, or just to kind of roll around on. they would also make great gifts for any adult who is a kid at heart, as stepping stools or for decoration.

last but not least, we got these super cool measuring cups/nesting dolls from fred and friends. you have to admit, this is absolutely genius. these measuring cups are sooo cute, practical and such a smart idea! i mean, come on… they are so adorable, you can set them on your kitchen counter instead of having even MORE stuff cluttering up your utensil drawers. not only that, but we got some other really fabulous stuff from fred. definitely check out our online store for all the cool stuff we have.

i want to let you all know as well that we can ship any of our items in time for christmas AND we can gift wrap!!! just make sure to get your orders in soon!

new prints!!

November 4, 2009

hi all!

sorry for lack in posts lately! goodness… we have been really slacking, haven’t we?

well, i guess we were just waiting for something REALLY good worth posting about and i think that we have something worthy! we recently received a whole batch of totally fabulous prints by mr. guy burwell. it is really outstanding stuff and lovely as always. some of the prints are brand spanking new and quite different looking than his other work. we also got some rare and very last few copies of some popular prints as well!

definitely check out the new stuff on our ONLINE STORE, along with all the other goodies we have!!

new stuff from MoMA!

August 27, 2009

we just got some really cool stuff in from MoMA this week and we’re super stoked to have it here! ever since the shop and gallery have been open, we’ve always gotten comments from customers and passerby’s that we remind them of the museum of modern art’s gift shop. so it only made sense that we start carrying some of their merchandise.

we got this cool ramen spoon+fork in. it’s like a cool updated version of a spork (if that’s even possible!). this was designed as a solution to the growing problem of disposable wooden chopsticks, which are quite a waste and bad on the environment.

we also got these super rad plates. the ‘chat plates’ come in this set of 3 and were designed to look like conversation bubbles from manga! how neat is that? check out our online shop to get all the details on the new items (plus some other new stuff)!

_____________________________________________________________________________________________

Deep within the brains of Jolby (Josh Kenyon & Colby Nichols) lies a heap of random nonsense ranging from one-eyed centaurs, moustached Englishmen, a sasquatch with a drinking problem, and gallons of caffeine. Captured in their first zine, this new body of work, created through their modern illustration style, invites us to explore the everyday thoughts and shenanigans of the artists. Accompanying the zine will be a selection of limited edition screen prints, printed by Keegan Meegan Press & Bindery. You may laugh or you may cry, but at one point you will most certainly say, “What the…?”

Artful Goods is excited to host this event featuring the collaborative work and zine release of Josh and Colby. First combining their talents in San Diego, they’ve blended their love of creatures, shapes, patterns and textures to become the powerhouse design duo known as Jolby.

Previously co-producing from two locations – Josh in Chicago and Colby in Portland – they continue to create unique and illustrative art.  Both Josh (who is transitioning to Portland) and Colby also work as Art Directors for Tangible Worldwide. They have shown their work at Subtext Gallery in San Diego, Together Gallery in Portland, and Wanderlust in the UK.

30 days until jolby explodes!

July 8, 2009

hi all!

hopefully everyone had a fun and safe 4th of july. we spent the weekend showcasing work by jessica at our art opening and it was quite the success. her work is quite impressive and everyone who came to view her scratchboard pieces agreed.

now that the opening for july is gone and past, we are already gearing up for our show next month! like i mentioned in previous posts, we’ll be hosting the first ever zine release by jolby! we’ll have the zines, goodies, plushies and lots of prints on hand for the show and we’re really excited about it! obviously, colby will be here since he’s local, but we JUST discovered last week that the other half of jolby (josh) will also be in attendance! how awesome is that???

we’ll be posting more once the show gets closer. until then, you can check out their blog where they have been posting some sneak peeks. check it out!

july and august

June 18, 2009

wowowowow. we have some really spectacular shows coming up! our summer here is shaping up to be pretty spectacular.

next month we are showing the work of a very talented local artist, jessica johnson. we’ve been working with jessica since the first day we opened our doors and have tons of her illustrative prints here, but this will be the first time we’ll be showing her original pieces! she has lots of new work and it all has this fabulous old timey feel to it. it reminds you of the 20’s and 30’s, vaudeville, circuses, etc etc.

we will post details for the show soooon.

also, we have an awesome show lined up for august! i posted not too long ago about jolby, a collab of josh kenyon and colby nichols. this show is going to be soooo fun! we’re officially counting down the days with them. check out their site and follow along with us!
